Bridge fishing in the Florida Keys during the winter time can be a great alternative to rough weather offshore fishing. the Seven Mile Bridge provides an excellent fishing environment, where during rough weather, the fisherman can effectively fish for a variety of species in calm and protected waters, regardless of the conditions. I like to call the Seven Mile Bridges, (the old Henry Flagler Railroad Bridge, and the new modern US1 bridge), a vertical reef. These two bridges provide a tremendous amount of habitat for fishes of many different species to live, and to feed.
The primary species that can be taken at the bridges are, mangrove snappers, mutton snappers, groupers, permit, tarpon, sharks, goliath groupers, jack crevalles, yellow jacks, hogfish, and a whole host of other species, depending on the conditions.
Techniques vary acording to the species targeted, but the well-prepared fisherman will leave the dock with the equipment necessary to target any of the above mentioned species.
on January 15th and 16th Capt. Jason DeShay, fishing our very popular 3/4 day combination trip, caught or released most of the species mentioned, including several resident tarpon, and a fishbox full of good eating snappers.
I will continue to disseminate information on the inshore light tackle bite through these fishing reports.
